Good Afternoon To All!!!

First email of the new year just to start whetting your appetite for the upcoming 2026 racing/flagging season!!  Corner workers of all experience levels will be needed for the following race weekends, so be sure to write the dates into your calendars!!

May 15, 16, 17

VSCDA Spring Brake and Driver's School

Gingerman Raceway

June 20, 21

SCCA Western Michigan Divisional

Grattan Raceway

August 14, 15, 16

VSCDA  AuGrattan Classic

Grattan Raceway

August 22, 23

SCCA West Michigan Region Majors

Grattan Raceway

Again, please consider placing these race weekends on your calendars, even if you are only available for a portion of the weekend.   It is becoming more difficult to staff the events with the appropriate number of corner workers to ensure the races operate efficiently and most importantly, safely.  Any days you can spend at the track will be much appreciatered.

To this end, I'm asking that each of you "passively" recruit new members to our group.  Should you become aware of anyone who may be interested in trying his/her hand at corner working, please request that person send me an email or leave me a voice message; I'll be happy to reach out.

Finally, if you no longer wish to receive these emails from me, please let me know and I'll remove your address from the list.

As usual, thank you for your time.  Hope to see you at Gingerman in May!!

Respectfully:

Nathan McCormick

GLD Spring Conference: Key Takeaways

We had a great discussion which explored ways to improve volunteer communication and outreach. Key ideas included clearer messaging, consistent emails, a centralizing information, and making registration easier for volunteers. There was agreement that Personal connections still remains key in growing and engaging our flagging community. For more details email GLDFlag@gmail.com.

Detroit Region SCCA

Hello fellow SCCA members and motorsport enthusiasts,

Spring is just around the corner—though the freezing temps outside reminds us we’re still very much in Michigan. And honestly, there’s no better place to be. As the home of the Motor City and a true hub of motorsports, we have a lot to be excited about.

Our 2026 calendar is packed, with more than 50 events spanning over 70 days of activity. No matter your discipline—Autocross, Rallycross, Road Racing, or Road Rally—there’s something for everyone. Even if you’ve hung up your driving gloves, you’re always welcome to spectate, connect with fellow enthusiasts, volunteer or join us for social events throughout the year.

On March 7th, we hosted our 2025 Awards Banquet—our largest social gathering of the year—with nearly 170 attendees. The evening celebrated our program champions and perpetual award winners, and featured the return of door prizes along with new raffle offerings totaling thousands of dollars. Guests also enjoyed a vehicle display and a motorsport art exhibit. Be sure to check out the full recap below.

Our driving schools are kicking off soon. Whether you’re looking to sharpen your skills or introduce a friend, family member, coworker, or neighbor to the sport, our upcoming schools provide the perfect opportunity to get behind the wheel and get up to speed.

With so much happening, I’ll let the articles that follow speak for themselves.

Before I close, one important reminder: this club doesn’t run on membership fees alone. It thrives because of the passion, commitment, and volunteer spirit of our members. For nearly 80 years, that dedication has fueled our events, our community, and our friendships. As we look toward the future, we’re always in need of new leaders and volunteers. If you feel ready to step up, we welcome you to the teams that make things happen.

Thank you for your continued support—we look forward to seeing you throughout the 2026 season.

Another Season to Remember

As the northern race season has closed, I'm hoping everyone had the opportunity to participate in the sport we all love this past year. While I personally was not able to attend as many races as I would have liked, I did enjoy being at the Detroit Grand Prix and a race at Waterford Hills.

It's now time to go through our personal equipment, discard what's not going to be needed, refresh anything that may need it, and replace that which has passed its useful life. My track bag is still in the trunk of my car, hoping for just one more race.

I hope each of you is enjoying this holiday season. Be safe, stay healthy and I look forward to seeing you at a nearby track and race in 2026.

The dates for the Detroit Grand Prix have been confirmed for the last weekend in May. As we receive confirmation of schedules for other series and tracks nearby, we'll post them on the MTM website, so stay tuned.

All the best,

Steve Balanecki
