J Marshal - Driver Series
I haven’t been driving a race car for a long time, but I do appreciate you considering my opinion! There are many things I appreciate about marshals, waving at me after a session, enduring temperature extremes (both hot and cold) for many hours, and JUST SHOWING UP!Observations - some marshals do things slightly differently, depending on where they have gained their experience.I’ve noticed this with some Canadian marshals - even though the flagging technique may be different, the end result is usually the same (excellent, for the most part)! |
Included
in marshal training - how about referencing or even supplying a copy of
the SCCA Flagging Manual!! It
is only a guidance document, but there is a huge amount of material
contained within that we all can learn from. Practices I wish would change -
waving yellow for a car off course, no worker at the car. When this occurs, I feel like I’m
being lied too! Also, if a
car pulls off into a station (safe location), people need to
evaluate what flag condition they should be. I don’t like seeing a car at a
station and a yellow flag displayed.
How big is that no passing zone? Two feet? Six inches? Noted from the driver’s seat -
motion of the flags, some stations difficult to see at speed, need for
bigger flag movement (Waterford Station 8 in particular). In conclusion - we need more
flaggers EVERYWHERE! Most
drivers are extremely appreciative of our efforts! Judi Bennett J Newsletter Ideas
As newsletter editor it has been fun bringing you
these "Marshal Driver" series. It has given each of us a new perspective
on how drivers see the flaggers and communicators on the corners. New ideas for future newsletters are wanted. Even
letters to the editor. Not that there ever has been a controversy to
discuss amongst marshals or their club. MTM Winter Meeeting
