A Change to the Bylaws
The motion on the table to revise the Michigan Turn Marshals Bylaws, Article III Paragraph A, and Article VIII Section 2, has been voted upon by all members of the Executive Committee and is passed unanimously as of 29 June 2002.
The MTM Executive Committee met by email to discuss a change to the MTM Bylaws. Participating were Scott Whitehead, Melissa Wojciechowski, Tim Martens, Debbie Martens, Ritch Pushies and Verne Wandell.
On 10 June 2002 Melissa Wojciechowski made a proposal to revise Article III Paragraph A, and Article VIII Section 2. These changes have to do with MTM providing training.
In the discussion that followed, overall consensus mirrored the comments made by Melissa in her proposal: While MTM always was, and will continue to be in support of training, we felt that the organization was susceptible to legal liability by stating that we "provide" training. Originally this was brought to our attention through discussions with members of other volunteer organizations that had experience with current legal practice and recent court decisions.
A motion was made on 26 June 2002 by Melissa Wojciechowski to change Article III Paragraph A to read:
"Promoting training and instruction of the highest caliber in the areas of flagging, communications, and safety standards to MTM members and other individuals interested in the Flagging and Communications specialty of racing" (remove the words "Providing and");
and Article VIII Section 2 to read:
"Current Appointed Positions
A) Newsletter Editor and Publisher
C) Recruitment Chairperson
D) Trash & Trinket Chairperson
E) Social Coordinator"
(remove "Training Coordinator").
The motion was seconded by Scott Whithead. All votes from the Executive Committee were received, and the motion passed unanimously.
This change takes effect as of 29 June 2002.
The MTM Executive Board wishes to assure our membership that this does not reflect a change in our values or principles. This change was made based upon the best (pro bono) legal advice available to us.
We will continue to announce all training opportunities made available for our members. And we recommend that members of Michigan Turn Marshals take advantage of any training classes and/or seminars that may be available to them.
The organizations that we support deserve the very best that we can provide. This is not only for their member's sake but also for our own as well. Continuing training is our best way to improvement. If you are new to the sport, sign up as a student. If you are an experienced turn marshal, share the benefits of your experience as an instructor. You might surprise yourself and learn something you didn't know before.
