The Formula SAE®
challenges university teams to conceive, design, fabricate and compete
with small formula-style, autocross racing cars. Over the course of
three days, the cars are judged in a series of static and dynamic events
including: Design Presentation, Cost Presentation, Engineering Design,
Acceleration and Skid Pad Performance, Solo Performance trials and
Endurance Performance & Fuel Consumption. The vehicles must also pass
strict safety standards. The
competition began in 1981 in Texas and migrated to the Detroit area in
1986. The series now includes events in Michigan, California,
Australia, Brazil, Germany, Italy and the U.K.
